The Effects of Self-esteem and the Perception of Physical Attractiveness on Satisfaction with Major

In recent years, appearance-related industries are rapidly evolving according to people's requirements and expectations on appearances are increasing. With wide range of social interest on appearance, the necessity for cosmetolgy professional has been increased. In 2009, the number of two-year colleges is approximately 120, the number of 4-year colleges and universities is 25, 21 graduate school of cosmetology department has been established currently. Even though the number of students with cosmetology degree has been exponentially increased, psychological approach and evaluation to the degree holders are poor. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to evaluate the effect of self-esteem and physical attractiveness perception on satisfaction with Major among cosmetology graduate students. The data collection was done between June 8 - June 25, 2010 and total 132 cases were used in the final analysis. The questionnaire analysis was done prior to the main analysis to trust the reliability coefficient of the Cronbach's Alpha. The followings are the results of the statistical processing of the analysis. It shows self-esteem and physical attractiveness perception has valuable effect on satisfaction with the major. In particular, the more effect of physical attractiveness perception than self-esteem is attributed to the academic speciality of the major. It seems to be necessary to set the direction of the cosmetology education curriculum to properly perceve and improve self-esteem or physical attractiveness perception of the students. It will enables us to establish more systematic professional training program.
