ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study is to prove the effect of essential oil(rose, clarysage, almond) on Korean middle-aged women's stress, depression and climacteric symptoms. We conducted a randomized trial designed to receive body massage using essential oil among 27 women, aged 40∼50 year old (almond oil group, n=9; clarysage oil group, n=8; rose oil group, n=10). We performed the body massage for 1 hour(face and decollete 15 minutes, abdominal area 10 minutes, arms 10 minutes, back 10 minutes and legs 15 minutes) a week for 10 weeks. Through a questionnaire, we surveyed the stress, depression and climacteric symptoms on before and after body massage. After body massage of almond oil, stress and depression score was significantly decreased(p<0.05). we observed reduction in stress, depression and climacteric symptoms score in clarysage oil group(p<0.01) and rose oil group(p<0.01) after 10 times body massage. The changes in stress, depression and climacteric symptoms score were significantly higher in rose oil group than in the other groups(p<0.001). In conclusion, our study shows that body massage using essential oil to middle-aged women may affect the reduction of stress, depression and climacteric symptoms.
