ABSTRACT
The present study focused on developing a HPLC method for the pattern analysis of Cirsium setidens Nakai. Moreover, anti-oxidant activity and whitening effect were examined to evaluate bioactivity of the extracts of Cirsium setidens Nakai., which was demonstrated as a possible functional cosmetic agent material. Ethanol extracts of aerial, underground and the drying leaves were prepared respectively to conduct DPPH assay, MSH-induced melanin production in B-16 cells and MTT assay. The Result suggested that the aerial part of Cirsium setidens showed dose-dependently anti- oxidant activity in DPPH. and inhibited tyrosinase activity and MSH-stimulated melanin production in B-16 cells most significantly than the other two parts.. Therefore, these results suggest that aerial part of Cirsium setidens will be developed as a functional cosmetic agent, such as excellent whitening agent.
