ABSTRACT
Myofascial pain syndrome means the light damage to the muscle and the membrane of muscle caused by a certain repetitive motion. Piano players tend to practice for long hours with repetitive motion being seated. As a result, many of them complain pain in the neck and shoulder and suffer trapezius muscle myofascial pain. In this study, 20 adult women were tested, who had the pain in the neck and shoulder while majoring in piano at university, to examine the effects of both myofascial release therapy and stretching therapy for alleviating the myofascial pain. They were divided into the myofascial release group composed of 10 and the stretching group composed of 10. The test was carried out 8 times for four weeks, two times each week. The body surface temperature, subjective pain were measured before and after the test. The test results showed that the body surface temperature rose by 1.20℃ on the average and the index of subjective pain decreased by an average of 6.5 in the myofascial release group and showed that the body surface temperature rose by 0.24℃ on the average and the index of subjective pain decreased by an average of 2.2 in the stretching group. The results of this study indicated that the myofascial release was effective in reducing the myofascial pain in the upper trapezius muscle than stretching.
