A Study on influencial factors in BMI Between Smoking Habits and BMI of university students in Seoul

ABSTRACT
Recently, fat and smoking is one of the serious phenomenon in modern society. Fat and smoking can result in more deleterious effect on physical health status. In addition, the university students are socially accepted the freedom to smoke. So they're easy to addict to the smoking. The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors to influence BMI between smoking group and non-smoking group among university students. Subjects were selected through convenience sampling from 8 universities in Seoul. Smoking habit, BMI, socio demographic data were obtained from WHO Questionnaires. The results are as follows; 1. The subject of this study were 429 male and 375 female university students. 2. The smoking habit between male and female student showed significant differences (p=0.000). And the pack of cigarettes per day between male and female student showed significant differences ( p=0.000). And smoking duration between male and female student showed significant differences (p=0.000). 3. In case of male students, smoking habit among different sociodemographic factors showed significant differences in following variables; grade (p=0.001), age (p=0.000), religion (p=0.004), In case of female students, smoking habit among different sociodemographic factors showed significant differences in following variable; religion (p=0.007) 4. The BMI distribution between male and female student showed significant differences (p=0.000). 5. The mean values of BMI are significantly differences in following variables; habitation (p<0.05) in male student. And the mean values of BMI are significantly differences in following variables; grade (p<0.05), and living with parent (p<0.05) in female students. 6. The mean values of BMI aren't significantly differences in following variables; smoking habit, the pack of cigarettes per day, smoking duration both male and female students. 7. The multiple regression analysis has a significant model in both current smoker (p=0.000) and nonsmoker (p=0.000). In case of current smoker, the mean BMI of female students is lower than that of male student. The current smoker get older, the BMI get increased. The duration of smoking is longer, the mean BMI get decreased. And in case of non-smoker, the mean of BMI of female students is lower than that of male students
