ABSTRACT
Skin, the largest body organ, is a major target for reactive oxygen species (ROS), physical and chemical toxic agents that a capable of altering its structure and functions. Thus, to maintain homeostasis of skin is an important. Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) has been well-known as a medicinal herb included numerous bioactive substances such as ginsenosides, and saponins. While the leaf, berry, and particularly root of ginseng are known to possess various biological functions, the role and function of ginseng seed are relatively unknown. In this study, we prepared oil extracted from ginseng seed and its antioxidant activity was evaluated in both ORAC and cellular antioxidant capacity in HepG2 cells. In ORAC assay, the scavenging activities of ginseng seed oil (0.05%-1%) against peroxyl and hydroxyl radicals are dose-dependently enhanced. We further examined that the cellular antioxidant activity of ginseng seed oil against oxidative stress generated by ROS generator including AAPH, Cu2+, and H2O2 in HepG2 cells. The ginseng seed oil effectively ameliorated the AAPH, Cu2+, and H2O2-induced oxidative stress in HepG2 cells. Collectively, the results show that ginseng seed oil is expected to preserve from ROS-induced membrane damage. Ginseng seed oil may be utilized as an antioxidant functional material in cosmetics and nutricosmetics fields.
